Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatment in Gurgaon

Snoring is often treated as a joke, or as someone else's problem, because the person snoring usually sleeps through it. But loud, regular snoring can be a sign that the airway is narrowing during sleep. When the airway closes completely for a few seconds at a time, it is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and it affects much more than sleep.

Dr. Sahil Kapoor evaluates adults and children with snoring and sleep apnea at Ace ENT Care, 238, Sector 5, Gurugram. The aim is to find where the airway is blocked and choose a treatment that fits that cause.

Why do people snore?

Snoring is the sound of soft tissues in the throat vibrating as air passes through a narrowed airway. Common causes include:

  • A blocked nose: deviated septum, allergy, swollen turbinates or polyps
  • Large tonsils or a long soft palate and uvula
  • Enlarged adenoids in children
  • Excess weight, especially around the neck
  • Alcohol or sleeping pills before bed, which relax the throat muscles
  • Sleeping on the back

Signs of obstructive sleep apnea

  • Loud snoring most nights
  • Pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep, often noticed by a partner
  • Waking up unrefreshed, with a dry mouth or headache
  • Daytime sleepiness, dozing off while reading, watching TV or even driving
  • Poor concentration and irritability
  • Waking up often at night to pass urine

Untreated sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and road accidents. In children, it can affect growth, behaviour and school performance.

How snoring and sleep apnea are evaluated

  • Detailed history, ideally with the bed partner present, and a sleepiness questionnaire
  • ENT examination of the nose, palate, tonsils and tongue base
  • Nasal endoscopy to check for blockage
  • Sleep study (polysomnography), done at a sleep lab or with a home device. It measures breathing, oxygen levels and how often the airway closes, and confirms whether sleep apnea is present and how severe it is.
  • In selected patients, an examination under sedation (DISE) to see exactly where the airway collapses

Treatment options

Snoring treatment and sleep apnea treatment in Gurgaon depend on the cause and severity.

Lifestyle changes

  • Weight loss, which often reduces snoring considerably
  • Avoiding alcohol and sedatives in the evening
  • Sleeping on the side
  • Regular sleep timings

Treating the nose

Steroid sprays, allergy treatment and, where needed, septoplasty or turbinate reduction to improve nasal breathing. On its own, nose surgery may not cure sleep apnea, but it often makes other treatments such as CPAP easier to use.

CPAP

For moderate to severe sleep apnea, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is the most effective treatment. A small machine delivers air through a mask and keeps the airway open during sleep. Most people need a few weeks to get used to it.

Oral appliances

Custom dental devices that move the lower jaw forward can help mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring, and are made by a dentist.

Surgery

Surgery is considered for selected patients, based on where the blockage is. Options include tonsillectomy, palate surgery such as UPPP, nasal surgery and, in children, adenoidectomy. Results depend on choosing the right patient and the right procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all snoring dangerous?

No. Occasional or mild snoring is common and often harmless. Loud snoring with breathing pauses or daytime sleepiness should be evaluated for sleep apnea.

Do I need a sleep study?

A sleep study is the standard way to confirm sleep apnea and its severity. It helps decide whether CPAP, surgery or other treatment is suitable.

Can surgery cure snoring permanently?

Surgery can reduce snoring in well-selected patients, but results vary. Weight gain and other factors can bring snoring back.

What does snoring or sleep apnea treatment cost?

It depends on the tests and the treatment chosen. You will get the details after the consultation.

Is treatment covered by insurance or Ayushman card?

Surgery done for a medical reason, such as tonsillectomy or septoplasty, is often covered. Coverage for sleep studies and CPAP depends on the policy. See the Ayushman card page.
