For families in Sector 9, Ace ENT Care in Sector 5 is a short drive away, which matters when you're bringing an elderly parent who doesn't enjoy long trips. Dr. Sahil Kapoor sees patients of every age, but this page is written with older adults in mind.
Hearing loss in older adults
Hearing tends to fade slowly, so the person affected is often the last to notice. Family members notice first: the TV volume keeps going up, phone calls get shorter, and Mum or Dad starts avoiding family gatherings because following the conversation is tiring.
A simple hearing test (pure tone audiometry) shows how much hearing has been lost and what type of loss it is. Sometimes the cause is just hard wax, which is easy to remove. See ear wax removal. More often it is age-related nerve loss, and a properly fitted hearing aid makes a real difference. A hearing aid should be chosen after testing, not bought off the shelf. More on hearing aids and implants.
Dizziness and falls
Feeling unsteady, or the room spinning when turning in bed, is common in older people. One common cause is BPPV, which can often be treated in the clinic with a simple repositioning manoeuvre. Other causes include inner ear problems, blood pressure changes and some medicines. Because falls are a real risk at this age, dizziness is worth getting checked. See vertigo treatment.
Please go to an emergency straight away if dizziness comes with weakness, slurred speech, a drooping face or a severe headache.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a hearing test painful?
No. You listen to sounds through headphones and press a button or raise a hand when you hear them.
Can ear wax cause hearing loss?
Yes, hard impacted wax can block the ear and reduce hearing. It is removed safely in the clinic.
My father gets dizzy when he gets out of bed. Should he be seen?
Yes. Positional dizziness is often due to BPPV and is usually treatable. It is worth checking, especially to reduce the risk of falls.
