Sinus Surgery (FESS) in Gurgaon

Most sinus problems are treated with medicines. But some people go through course after course of antibiotics and sprays and still live with a blocked nose, facial pressure and no sense of smell. For them, functional endoscopic sinus surgery, usually called FESS, can help.

Dr. Sahil Kapoor has trained in endoscopic sinus surgery and treats patients with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps at Ace ENT Care, 238, Sector 5, Gurugram.

What are the sinuses?

The sinuses are air-filled spaces in the bones of the face, around the nose and eyes. They drain into the nose through small openings. When these openings are blocked by swelling, polyps or a narrow anatomy, mucus collects, gets infected, and the cycle of sinusitis begins.

Who needs FESS?

FESS is considered when:

  • Chronic sinusitis continues despite proper medical treatment for several weeks
  • Nasal polyps block the nose and don't shrink enough with medicines
  • Sinus infections keep coming back several times a year
  • There is a fungal sinus infection or a sinus cyst (mucocele)
  • There is a complication, such as an infection spreading towards the eye

A CT scan of the sinuses and a nasal endoscopy are essential before deciding on surgery. They show which sinuses are affected and help plan a safe operation.

How FESS is done

FESS is done entirely through the nostrils using an endoscope, a thin telescope with a camera. There is no cut on the face. Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon:

  • Widens the natural drainage pathways of the affected sinuses
  • Removes polyps and diseased tissue
  • Clears thick mucus or fungal debris
  • Keeps healthy lining intact as far as possible

The operation usually takes one to two hours, depending on how many sinuses are involved. A septoplasty may be done at the same time if the septum is deviated.

Recovery after sinus surgery

  • Most patients go home the same day or the next day.
  • A blocked nose, mild bleeding and discharge are normal for one to two weeks.
  • Saline nasal rinses, started a day or two after surgery, are very important for healing.
  • Avoid blowing the nose hard, heavy lifting and swimming for about two weeks.
  • Follow-up visits for endoscopic cleaning of the nose help prevent scarring.
  • Most people return to desk work within a week.

After surgery: why follow-up matters

FESS opens up the sinuses, but the lining still needs care. People with allergy, asthma or polyps usually need to continue a steroid nasal spray and rinses after surgery. Regular follow-up lets problems be caught early. This is the single biggest factor in how well people do in the long term.

Risks

FESS is a well-established procedure. Possible risks include bleeding, infection, adhesions and, rarely, injury to the eye or skull base, which lie close to the sinuses. These are uncommon and are explained before surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FESS the same as balloon sinuplasty?

No. Balloon sinuplasty only dilates sinus openings and suits a small group of patients. FESS can also remove polyps and diseased tissue. The right choice depends on the CT scan.

Will my sense of smell come back?

Many patients with polyps notice an improvement in smell after surgery, but it is not certain, especially if smell has been absent for a long time.

Can nasal polyps come back after FESS?

Polyps can come back in some patients, especially those with asthma or allergy. Continuing nasal sprays and regular follow-up reduce this chance.

What is the cost of sinus surgery in Gurgaon?

It depends on the number of sinuses involved, whether septoplasty is combined, and the hospital stay. An estimate is given after the CT scan and consultation.

Is FESS covered under insurance or Ayushman card?

FESS for chronic sinusitis or polyps is usually covered by health insurance and is included in PMJAY packages for eligible patients. See the Ayushman card page.
