Ear problems we see often
- Ear pain: from an infection of the ear canal or the middle ear, or sometimes referred from the throat or jaw.
- Discharge from the ear: especially if it keeps coming back after a bath or a cold. This often means a hole in the eardrum.
- A blocked ear: usually wax, sometimes fluid behind the eardrum or a problem with the Eustachian tube.
- Hearing loss or ringing in the ear.
Please don't do this at home
We see a lot of ears that were made worse by home treatment. Cotton buds push wax deeper and can scratch the canal. Oil, garlic or onion juice in a painful or discharging ear can make an infection worse, and some ear drops are not safe if the eardrum has a hole. It's better to get the ear examined first.
How it's treated
The ear is examined with an otoscope or an ear endoscope, and a hearing test is done if needed. Most infections settle with cleaning and medicines. Wax is removed in the clinic, see ear wax removal. Can I put oil in my ear for pain?
It's better not to. If there is an infection or a hole in the eardrum, oil can make things worse. Get the ear examined first.
My ear keeps discharging after a bath. Why?
That usually points to a hole in the eardrum or a long-standing middle ear infection. It should be checked, and the ear kept dry until then.
Is ear wax removal painful?
It's usually painless and takes a few minutes in the clinic.
