Dr. Sahil Kapoor sees adults and children with snoring and other ENT problems.

When snoring is more than noise

Occasional snoring is common and often harmless. It's worth getting checked if you notice:

  • Loud snoring most nights
  • Pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep
  • Waking up tired, with a headache or a dry mouth
  • Dozing off during the day, especially while driving
  • In children: restless sleep, bed-wetting, mouth breathing, poor concentration or crankiness

These can be signs of obstructive sleep apnea, which is linked to high blood pressure, heart problems and accidents if it goes untreated.

Finding the cause

Snoring happens where the airway narrows, and that's different for different people. The examination looks at the nose, palate, tonsils and tongue base. A sleep study may be suggested to confirm sleep apnea and see how severe it is.

Treatment options

  • Weight loss, sleeping on your side, and avoiding alcohol and sedatives at night
  • Treating a blocked nose, sometimes with septoplasty
  • CPAP for moderate to severe sleep apnea
  • Surgery for selected patients, such as tonsillectomy, or adenoidectomy in children

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my partner come to the appointment?

If possible, yes. They can describe your sleep, which helps a lot with the diagnosis.

My child snores every night. Is that normal?

Snoring most nights isn't something to ignore in children. Enlarged adenoids or tonsils are a common cause and can affect sleep, growth and behaviour.

Will surgery stop snoring for good?

Surgery helps in well-selected patients, but results vary. The right treatment depends on what is causing the snoring.
